Planned Worcester boiler replacement in Crawley, with a new lounge radiator and powerflush

When we looked at this planned boiler replacement in Pound Hill, Crawley, there was more to consider than the boiler itself.

The old Potterton was thought to be around 20 years old and had suffered a number of component failures over the previous years. Some of the loft pipework needed improving, and the lounge relied on a gas fire rather than having its own radiator.

We treated those issues as one heating project: a new Worcester Bosch Greenstar 4000, improved pipework, smarter controls, a properly sized lounge radiator and a full powerflush.

Location: Pound Hill, Crawley, West Sussex

Boiler: Worcester Bosch Greenstar 4000 25 kW combi

Controls: Bosch EasyControl with internet-based weather compensation

Additional work: Lounge radiator, loft pipework improvements, roof flue, system cleaning and protection

Completed: September 2026

Time to compare the whole quotation

The homeowner planned this upgrade rather than waiting until the boiler stopped working altogether. We quoted in good time, giving them space to compare other quotations and ask questions without having to make a rushed decision.

That is a good position to be in when replacement is already the right choice. You can look beyond the boiler model and the final price, and check what is included: the controls, flue and roof work, system cleaning, pipework changes and guarantee.

An older boiler does not automatically need replacing, and a breakdown cannot always be predicted. Our job is to explain the options for the home in front of us.

We do not increase the price of a boiler installation simply because the existing boiler has broken down. We price the work it needs, whether it is a planned replacement or an urgent one.

Improving the loft pipework, not just reconnecting it

There were parts of the existing pipework that I did not want to leave as they were.

We replaced accessible plastic sections close to the boiler with copper, addressing the unsuitable arrangement without major disruption to the loft boarding. We also moved pipework away from the chimney breast to make room for insulation.

That detail matters in a loft. The aim was to reduce avoidable heat loss and improve protection against freezing, rather than leave the pipes pressed against the wall where they could not be insulated properly. Insulation reduces the risk; it is not a guarantee against freezing.

We also carried out the roof work for the new vertical flue and fitted support clamps to hold the flue securely in position.

A new radiator for the room that needed it

The lounge stood out during the survey. Its main heat source was a gas fire, and the homeowner was concerned about how cold the room could become in winter.

We found a practical route from the pipework serving the hallway radiator. That allowed us to extend the heating into the adjoining lounge, taking care over the through-wall route and the visible pipework.

The homeowner had a say in the radiator position, so we worked around both the room's heating needs and how they wanted the finished installation to look.

We fitted a 1,000 × 600 mm K2 double-panel radiator with thermostatic radiator control, selected to meet the room's heat-loss requirement without relying on the gas fire.

The lounge now has its own central-heating radiator rather than depending on the fire as its main source of warmth.

Why we chose the Worcester 4000 and EasyControl

We selected the Worcester Bosch Greenstar 4000 25 kW combi with Bosch EasyControl. The boiler has an A-rated heating efficiency classification, a clear colour display and compatibility with EasyControl. Those are useful features, but the installation and settings matter just as much as the boiler itself. Worcester's Greenstar 4000 details.

For this home, we used EasyControl's internet-based weather information, rather than a separate outdoor sensor. The heating setup uses weather compensation, and EasyControl also allows the homeowner to adjust schedules and temperatures through its app. More about EasyControl.

Weather compensation adjusts the temperature of the water sent to the radiators as outdoor conditions change. A milder day generally needs less heat than a freezing one. Lower operating temperatures, where the radiators can still meet the home's needs, help a condensing boiler recover heat that would otherwise leave through the flue. Worcester's explanation of condensing operation.

The aim was to run the heating at a suitable lower temperature, not simply leave the new boiler working at a high setting all the time. We are not attaching an invented percentage saving to that. Actual energy use depends on the home, weather and how the heating is used.

A full powerflush, followed by checks and a report

We included a full powerflush as part of this installation, giving the existing heating system a thorough clean before putting the new setup into service.

The flushing machine was taken into the loft and connected at the boiler's magnetic-filter connection point. We circulated cleaning chemicals and worked through the radiators individually, manually agitating them to help loosen sludge and debris.

We continued rinsing until the discharge water ran clear. At the end of the powerflush, we carried out a full check and completed a report.

This was more than a drain-down and refill. It was an opportunity to clean the existing radiators and pipework as part of the wider upgrade.

Protecting the new boiler

We fitted a Worcester Bosch magnetic system filter to capture circulating magnetic debris. It provides ongoing protection after cleaning; it does not replace the need to clean a dirty system properly. Worcester's system-filter information.

A separate scale-control device was also fitted on the incoming cold-water supply. This serves a different purpose from the magnetic filter on the heating circuit.

The boiler, cleaning and protection need to be considered together, rather than treating the filter as a substitute for preparing the system.

The 10-year manufacturer's guarantee

As Worcester Accredited Installers, we specified this installation with a 10-year Worcester Bosch manufacturer's guarantee, subject to the qualifying filter, registration and manufacturer's conditions. Worcester's guarantee lengths.

This is manufacturer-backed cover for qualifying boiler faults, including parts and labour under Worcester's terms. Annual servicing is required, and the cost of that servicing is not included in the guarantee. It is not blanket cover for every component of the existing heating system. Read the manufacturer's guarantee terms.

We want the homeowner to understand who provides the cover and what is needed to keep it in place, rather than just see a number of years on a quotation.

Austin's involvement, from start to finish

Austin, our apprentice, was involved throughout, working alongside me from decommissioning the old boiler through to the new installation and radiator work.

That included learning about safe electrical and gas isolation, setting out the radiator, choosing suitable fixings and thinking through the pipework route into the adjoining hallway.

I want him to understand why we do things, not just how to fit the parts. That includes listening to the customer about positioning and neatness, as well as getting the practical work right.

More than a replacement boiler

The homeowner now has a new boiler and controls, improved accessible loft pipework, a new roof flue, a cleaned heating system and a lounge radiator selected for the room.

For me, that is what a properly considered heating upgrade should look like. Not replacing everything for the sake of it, but taking the time to identify what will make the installation work better for the home.
